Thar Desert Safari – The Most Thrilling Journey Through The Desert
Visiting Rajasthan, exploring Jaisalmer become incomplete without a camel safari in the great Thar Desert of India and Sonar Kella/ Golden Fort. Naturally, in our Rajasthan tour itinerary, we also include a camel safari. Jaisalmer/Golden city is a town in the western side of the Rajasthan, comprises of the Thar Desert and the forts. So without wasting much time, let’s go to our story on Thar Desert Safari – The Most Thrilling Journey Through The Desert on the back of the camel.
According to our tour plan, we started our journey from Jodhpur and reached the Thar Desert at around 3 pm in the afternoon.
We quickly checked in our tent hotels, standing in a series which looks so beautiful. The name of the tent was Sam Dhani tent. It was a private property but we booked it from RTDC in Kolkata.
After a quick fresh up we came out and we get amazed to see 3 camels sitting side by side and the camel riders were waiting for us. It was such a wonderful experience and we all were so much excited to ride the camel for the first time in life that too in the Thar Desert.
Without wasting any time we all headed towards the camels. The camel riders quickly shared the techniques of how to ride on the camel. It’s a very tricky technique. During getting down camels first fold their front legs and then back legs. Again while standing up the camel first raises its back legs and then its front legs.

Funny Incident That Happened With Us:
We both rode on the same camel. First, my partner (Debabrati) sat on the camel but as I was about to sit on the camel in the second row, the camel stood up all of a sudden and I fell down from his back straight to the sand. My partner was hanging from the camel’s neck and was shouting out of fear. The rider later tried to calm us down by pulling down the camel’s chain and making it sit again.
Luckily it became a funny incident for us but it might become an accident. So always ride safely.
Though we both were feeling little scared after that incident but finally settled and the camel began to walk in a rhythm. We also adjusted our body movement along with the rhythm and our ride turned up so incredible for us.
Desert Safari Enjoyment Begins:
The real enjoyment starts when the camel stepped on the sand of the Thar Desert after crossing a narrow lane which made a divider between the tents hotel and the starting of the Thar Desert.
Riding on the camel and taking the glimpse of the horizon stretch of the desert looked so magnificent and it seemed as the ocean of the sand. The design of waving lines on the Sand dunes represents the artistic impression of the desert that is made by natural phenomenon.
Camels were walking and the magnificent beauty of desert was unfolding one after another. As the sun was ready for the set, so the heat of the climate slowly came down and when the gentle wind passed us, it gave us a nice sensation. But on the other hand of this nice sensation, another thing that troubled us was the sand that came along with the wind and more or less gave a nice sand bath (Funny!! Right). This sand bath was also fine for us, after all experiencing so much thrilling camel ride within the Thar Desert. Nothing can beat this adventurous mood.
By now we feel quite comfortable with the rhythm of the camel. So somehow adjusting ourselves with the camel rhythm, we tide the scurf all through our head and neck successfully just to guard ourselves against the sand.
The camel riders are so friendly. They took us through more interior of the desert where we could visualize the vast desert as far as our eyes go.
The camel took us to a pile of the desert.
Now it was the time for photography. Camel riders took the camera from us and clicked some awesome photographs of us sitting on the camel. We took a round trip from the Thar Desert to Sam desert and finally put our feet on the sand.
The sun was about to set and the slanting golden rays of the sun got reflected on the sand. The sun rays made the sand more glittering and the reflected yellow colors were playing all around.
Far away half of the sun already gets emerged in the sand and the whole surroundings get colored with orange-yellow. And from those colors, a burning red beam came out with an intense beauty.
We loved that scene. Moreover, the camels and other tourists who are were standing far from us look like mini showpiece as someone placed them to make a complete “Sun Set Canvas”.
The sand of the desert was very fine and it felt silky in hand. For that moment we went to our childhood and played with sand for some time.
YES! YES! I know you are laughing, but that the best thing we could do at that moment.
By now the sun was setting and we were ready to get back to our tent. So for coming back, we hired a camel cart. It was a nice and unique experience of spending time in the desert and to see the sunset standing within the vast Thar Desert.
Use scarf, hat or cap and most importantly a spectacle in the desert to save yourself from sand attack.
During riding, be safe and steady.
Additionally, tourist can avail jeep safari and biking in the desert.
