A little outside of Kolkata, around 16 Km from Esplanade, the Bhavatarini Mata, an aspect of Kali Mata, founded a temple profoundly known as Dakshineswar Kali Temple situated on the eastern bank of the Hooghly River. The name Bhavatarini meaning ‘She who liberates her devotees from the ocean of existence i.e. ‘Samsara’.

Dakshineswar Kali Temple,formally known as Sri Sri Jagadishwari Mahakali, built up by Rani Rashmoni, a philanthropist and a devotee of Kali on 31st May, 1855.

ST. PAUL’S CATHEDRAL – Asia’s First Episcopal Church.

While visiting the “Island of Attractions” in Kolkata, a 201 feet tall spire will definitely catch your glimpse.  After visiting Birla planetarium,Rabindra Sadan, Nandan,Victoria Memorial , don’t forget to visit Kolkata’s another most important cultural heritage that is St. Paul’s Cathedral- Asia’s First Episcopal Church. The Cathedral is just beside Birla Planetarium. It is visible from Rabindra Sadan and Victoria Memorial.

St.Paul’s Cathedral Church, constructed in between the year 1839 – 1847 by Major W. N. Forbes and C.K. Robinson and founded by Daniel Wilson in the year 1847.


It was the first Episcopal Church in Asia and the largest Cathedral in Kolkata. It is an Anglican Cathedral in Kolkata under Church Of North India.
