Series of Mountains

We started our tour from Cherrapunji but you can also plan your trip from Shillong. But staying in Cherrapunji was really a nice experience. We halted at La Kupar Inn Hotel at Sohra. It is a nice place to stay and enjoy some quality time with your family or loved ones along with the bonfire in the evening after the whole day tour. The hotel manager arranged all the setups.
Our tour itinerary was Nohsngithiang Waterfalls, Mawsmai cave, Noh-Ka li Kai waterfalls, Arwah cave, and Daiñthlen Falls.
So we started our journey at around 8:30 am after having our breakfast and our first destination was Nohsngithiang Falls waterfalls.

Nohsngithiang Waterfalls

It may be difficult to pronounce the name of the waterfalls but it has another beautiful name which is popular all over the world that is Seven Sister Waterfalls. It is a 7 segmented waterfall flowing down the hills located 1 km south of Mawsmai village in East Khasi Hills district in the Indian state of Meghalaya. After rolling for about 30mins we finally reached the place. The weather was chilling and the waterfall looks amazing.

Along with an astonishing view of the Seven Sisters, you’ll also be able to have a look at the plains of Bangladesh right across the viewpoint. But due to dense fog, we failed to get the view. The passing breeze made us feel wintry. If you like to grab some foods, then the burnt corn is the best option. Though they are bit costly but having hot burnt corn along with salt and lemon juice will give pleasure to your taste buds.

After clicking some great pictures, we headed towards our next destination.

Mawsmai cave:

The entrance of Mawsmai cave

One of the most famous caves in Meghalaya, situated around 6Kms, is the Mawsmai Cave. We booked our tickets and made our way towards the entrance of the cave. We walked down 50 to 75 steps and finally reached in front of the mouth of the cave. From the front, the cave looked like a demon opening his big mouth with his clumsy teeth and foul smelly inside. But truly the cave is a great sculpture by nature own. The curves are so beautiful and form different shapes and size. One can imagine a lot more from the curves of the cave.

Inside the Mawsmai cave

The path was quite rough and difficult for elderly people to cross the curvy paths of the rocks inside. We can’t get admitted fully inside the cave as it was restricted. As per guide the cave has a long way deep inside and can get out from the other end of the cave. The stalactites and stalagmites structure along with the droplets of water from the rocks inside the cave made us feel little adventurous. Overall it was a nice experience..
Now it’s time for rolling to our next…

Noh-Ka li Kai waterfalls:

Around 11km away from Mawsmai cave, a splendid waterfall that took our breath away with its beauty was Noh-Ka li Kai waterfalls.

Noh-Ka li Kai waterfalls – One of the magnificent waterfalls of Meghalaya

But besides this magnificent waterfall, there is a sad story. Noh-Ka-Likai means ‘in the lap of Likai’. Let’s jump into the storyline.

The story behind this fall is a tragic one.

This is a story of a young lady named Ka Likai who lead a happy married life and blessed with a baby girl. But the happy times came to an end along with the loss of her husband. This was not the end as she fell in love again and got married. She was glad that her daughter now had her father. But the tragedy of the tale began with the over possessiveness of her husband towards Ka Likai. And for that, he could not tolerate the love of ka Likai for her daughter. He started to hate the baby girl.

One fine day she was out for work as usual and after tireless day when she returned back home, she found that her husband already prepared a delicious meal for her.

She felt very happy and gobbled up the food quickly. Later she went to the kitchen to wash her dish and then observed that her daughter’s fingers were cut and strewn in the trash bin. She understood the complete happenings and felt terribly sad and decided to commit suicide. She went up the mountain cliff to jump off and commit suicide.

Likai jumped from the same rock face where the falls is flowing from. Since then the falls is named as ‘Noh-Ka-Likai Falls’ or ‘In the lap of Likai Falls’.

If you want to trek down to the base of the river bed, you need to go by the concrete step. Travel buffs must go to the base and take some amazing photographs of one of the best falls I have ever seen in India.

Arwah cave:

Arwah cave – Famous for Fossils

This cave is newer in comparison to the Mawsmai Cave. But the scenic view was beyond imagination. To reach there we took a left turn before Sohra and rolled within a sandy bumpy road. After 10 mins we finally reached the place from where we need to start our trek. So after getting down from the car we really got amazed to see the floating clouds in front of us. The cloudy climate almost made our way invisible but could not stop our trek to reach the Arwah cave.

Arwah cave

To reach the cave you need to walk around 15 to 20 mins either through well paved pleasant way or the rough rocky way for more adventure. We took the first one. The pavement was well maintained along with the wooden railing. Surrounded by the dense forest of Law Shynna in Meghalaya, Arwah Cave is an absolute treat for adventure and archaeological junkies. Walking through the clouds and the tune of waterfalls turned our trek into a real fun.

The adobe of Clouds in the way of Arwah Cave

Arwah Caves, known for limestone formations derived from stalactites and stalagmites similar to Mawsmai cave. But the most interesting part of this cave was the fossils of millions of year old.

We too like other explorers had spotted different fossils in various shape and size of the fish, dog skull etc. It is documented that the fossils are from the Palaeocene era (about 5.5-6.5 crore years ago) belonging to Mollusca. The cave naturally formed many bends and carves so that tourist can walk through the cave. Within the cave, there was a certain restriction after which one cannot go beyond. A small stream was also flowing within the cave.

We returned back and had our lunch at a local restaurant. Afterward, we continue our journey towards Daiñthlen Waterfalls.

Daiñthlen Waterfalls:

Rock patches at Daiñthlen Waterfalls

This one is little different in respect of view of the waterfalls. Here we experienced how the streams of water dribbling through the rocks and make their own way towards the cliff of the hill to form a waterfall.

Passing through the curves of the hilly roads along with the beautiful scenic view, we finally reached our destination. It comprises a wide hilly area with hollow patches filled with water. This place is also famous as sunset viewpoint in the lap of mountains. We thoroughly enjoyed the beauty of nature until the sky became dark.
Now it’s time to return back to our hotel and we started our journey. By now everyone became tired and the soft music was our tonic for boosting up.
We returned back to the hotel with a bunch of fresh memories. Later our hotel manager arranged bonfire in the garden, but we couldn’t stay outside for long as the temperature started falling making us frigging cold.
Now the time has come to bid goodbye till we are up with our next blog…By the way, this is not the end of exploring Cherrapunji. So stay tuned for the second day in Cherrapunji.
