There are numerous ponds inside the garden where you will find lovely red water lilies blooming. As the shadow of the trees falls over the pond it creates a beautiful artistic view. The lotus flower spreading its large leaves all over the pond is truly graceful. The colorful bright red poppies blossom all over the garden. It is the best location for a walk in between the shades of trees during the extreme heat of Kolkata.

History:

Acharya Jagadish Chandra Bose Botanic Garden (formerly called Indian Botanic Garden), established by Colonel Robert Kyd on November 2, 1987, for determining and analyzing new plants of commercial value.  Later on, when Botanist William Roxburgh was appointed as a superintendent in the year 1793, he brought plants from all over India to form a wide herbarium.

The major contributors for the expansion of the garden were Botanist William Roxburgh along with Dr. George King and Thomas Anderson.  The first cultivation of tea which is now grown in Assam and Darjeeling started from here.  The garden is covering around 273 acres (110 hectares) of land.

Special Attraction:

When you hear the word “Botanical Garden of Kolkata” the first thing that will click your mind is the Great Banyan Tree.

It is the world’s largest tree  and the 2nd largest canopy. The great banyan tree is more than 250 years old.

After the hit of two cyclones, the main trunk got damaged.  Hence in the year 1925, the officials remove the main trunk to keep the other part in a good condition.  The tree continued to stretch beyond 970 meters of land, built around its circumference.

The birth of the tree, not known but some say that it was the result of a bird’s droppings and it grew on a phoenix tree.  There are around 3772 aerial roots which move down towards the ground forming prop roots. You will be amazed to know that the circumference of the canopy is 450 meters which makes the tree look like a forest. The tree covers an area of 1.89 hectares (18,918 square meters) almost the size of a mini forest.

The name of this giant-sized tree, recorded in the “Guinness Book Of World Records”.

One more thing you will notice, that the leaves of the lotus floating over the pond is much larger and huge in size compared to the normal size of a lotus leaf.

Trees And Animals:

While walking through the garden you will be amazed by the massive collection of orchids, bamboos, palms, plants of Screwpine genus, medicinal plants,mahagony trees, Cuban palm trees, mango trees, tamarind trees, Bougainvillea, Citrus, Pandanus, Jasmine, Waterlilies, Krishnabot, Shivalinga Tree etc. Additionally, the garden is the home of many rare species plants including Phoenix Rupicola, Double Coconut Palm Tree, Century Palm.

Also, P. Unguifer, Euryale Ferox Salisb, Cannon Ball Tree, Bread Fruit Tree, Mad Tree, Sausage Tree, Chrysophyllum Cainito, Sicilian Double Coconut Tree, Palmyra Tree (multi-branched), Victoria Amazonica etc are available.

The rare species of trees mostly brought from Java, Nepal, Brazil, Sumatra, Sicily, Malaysia etc. They mainly cultivated and nurtured here.

If you visit the garden you will definitely come across the beautiful Jungle Babblers, Golden Oriole, Black Ramped Flameback, Rufous Treepie, Common Drongo, Green Bea Eaters, Bronze-winged Jacans etc. Moreover, the chirping of the birds overflows the entire garden. On your way, you will be meeting signature spiders busy making webs, squirrels running here and there, snails, resplendent butterflies on the lovely flowers, grasshoppers, mongoose, dragonflies etc. Some also had the chance to meet with a variety of snakes and jackals, foxes inside the garden.

There exists “Thomson’s Personal Library” inside the park where you will get an enormous collection of books on Botany. If you want to gain vivid knowledge about the plants just rush into the library because it’s the best place which will provide proper information to all your queries.

There is also a pond where Boating Facility is available and you can enjoy boating.

The ultimate destination of the diverse community of plants (flora) and natural vegetation is located in Shibpur, Howrah on the west bank of River Hooghly and 8Km. from Kolkata.
