Four minarets of the Charminar

The 400 years old Charminar, built by the 5th Sultan of the famous Qutb Shahi dynasty, Sultan Muhammed Quli Qutb Shah in 1591. The word Charminar signifies ‘Char’ meaning Four and ‘Minar’ meaning Tower. Due to insufficient water and attack of plague, forced Sultan to shift his capital from Golkonda to a new city. He prayed to God to end the sufferings of his people and made a promise to build a mosque at the point where he prayed. Additionally, another interesting fact about the Charminar is that Sultan Muhammed Quli Qutb Shah wrote a quote on the foundation stone, addressing God “Fill this city of mine with people as You filled the river with fishes O Lord.”

The architecture of the Charminar:

The architecture of Charminar holds a great legacy of Indo-Islamic architecture style, incorporating Persian architectural elements. Charminar is one of India’s iconic medieval monuments and got the recognition from the Archaeological Survey of India as an archaeological and architectural treasure on the official “List of Monuments”.

Charminar gate and busy bazaar

Coming back to our story…After crossing the bazaar, we finally reached in front of the Charminar. The Bazaar was very crowded and the streets were almost occupied by the shops. If you love street shopping, then you can’t miss this place.

This bazaar, popularly known as Charminar Bazaar and famous for perfume and exquisite pearls, especially Basra pearl. These pearls can also be embellished on gold or silver jewelry.

Other than pearl and perfume shops, Hyderabadi tailoring shops are also famous in that area. Their handmade sherwani and salwar suit is very much famous. Shopping without having street food is incomplete. You cannot ignore the welcoming smell of mouth-watering foods coming from the series of food stall on the pavement.

The fine embedded work on the wall of the Charminar along with the big watch in the middle

We booked our ticket and waited in a queue to go upstairs of the Charminar. The fine embedded work on the wall of Charminar was truly amazing and took our glance. We noticed a big clock placed in the middle of the Charminar. Later we came to know about the clock from a local guide. During the early British colonial Era, they introduced the clock on the four cardinal directions in 1889. Charminar – Arc De Triumph of the East

Finally, we climbed up through a spiral stair. The view of the bazaar from the above was so amazing and we realized how busy the bazaar was. The three-layered arch shaped windows surrounding the dome shape architecture in the middle was incredible. We took many pictures standing in almost every corner of the Charminar. After roaming throughout the 1st floor of Charminar, we finally came out and had some foods. We are not that much fond of shopping, so we skipped that part and headed towards the hotel.
